The Georgian ski resort of Bakuriani hosts the World and European Cups held under the auspices of the International Ski Federation (FIS). This was reported by the Mountain Resorts Development Company under the Ministry of Economy of Georgia. As part of the European Cup stage, on February 19 and February 20, parallel and giant slalom competitions will be held, and within the World Cup - in slopestyle (March 4 - qualification, March 6 - final) and Freeski skiing (March 3 - qualification, March 5 - the final).
More than 200 athletes from 40 countries of the world - Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Poland and others will take part in the competition. A special guest is Austrian snowboarder Benjamin Carl, who became an Olympic champion in Beijing.
As noted by the Mountain Resorts Development Company, these competitions will be a test for Georgia on the eve of the World Championship in freestyle and snowboarding, which will be held in Bakuriani in 2023.
“Successful hosting of the World Cup stages is important, since Georgia should take an honorable place on the world map in the field of winter tourism,” the ministry notes.
To prepare for the tournament, large infrastructure projects were implemented at the Georgian ski resort. Three new cable cars were built, an artificial snow system was installed, a competition track was built, special equipment and safety equipment were purchased.
